Die moderne Ärztin Dorothy Beaumont wird unerwartet als übersehene und törichte Prinzessin in das Shalior-Reich versetzt. Sie gerät sofort in Gefahr, wird unter Drogen gesetzt und rettet im daraus resultierenden Chaos mit einer Pistole Sterling Windsor, den Lord des Nordens. Während er verletzlich ist, nutzt sie die Gelegenheit und verbringt eine leidenschaftliche Nacht mit ihm. Am nächsten Tag flieht Dorothy eilig, vergisst jedoch, ihre Pistole mitzunehmen. Als Sterling aufwacht und die Waffe entdeckt, macht er sich auf die Suche nach Dorothy, um zu lernen, wie man sie nachbaut. Durch einen Schicksalsschlag nimmt er jedoch fälschlicherweise eine andere Frau, Beatrice Young, gefangen, weil er glaubt, sie sei Dorothy, und bringt sie zurück in den Palast. Beatrice nutzt diese Verwechslung aus, stellt ihre falsche Identität zur Schau und macht Dorothy das Leben schwer, doch Dorothy wehrt sich geschickt gegen jede Herausforderung, was dazu führt, dass Beatrice sich letztendlich selbst untergräbt. Während Sterling vorgibt, Beatrice zu bevorzugen, entwickelt er heimlich Gefühle für Dorothy und um sie zu beschützen, erträgt er die Situation stillschweigend. Der König, der Sterlings wachsende Macht fürchtet, ignoriert die Notlage des Volkes während einer feindlichen Invasion und hält Sterling davon ab, in die Schlacht zu ziehen. Um dem tyrannischen König entgegenzutreten und die Bürger zu retten, erlangt Sterling mit Dorothys Hilfe die Kontrolle über das Militär zurück und rettet das Volk aus der Gefahr. Am Ende besteigt Sterling den Thron, mit Dorothy als Kaiserin an seiner Seite. Sie schaffen das Haremsystem ab und bekennen sich zu einem Leben als Einheit.
